When it comes to church, here are some things that get under my skin...
- A church led by people who think and act like they've arrived.
- A church led by people who don't have relationships with people who are different than they are.
- A church whose chief concern is to make a name for itself.
- A church that only copies other churches instead of listening to God and finding their own way.
- A church that pressures and manipulates its people to perform, rather than introducing its people to the transforming power of the gospel.

-A church whose members cling stubbornly to the past, even as the world changes around them.
-A church in which creativity isn't valued.
The culture of 'intellectualizing' our faith vs. emotionally connecting with ourselves and spiritually connecting with/to/in God. Too much time talking ABOUT God, not enough time talking about how He wants to change our lives. Scazzero's Emotionally Healthy Spirituality and Emotionally Healthy Church are such a welcome breath of fresh air!
"A church that pressures and manipulates its people to perform, rather than introducing its people to the transforming power of the gospel."
- This is probably the Lutheran side of me talking, but this one really gets to me. If I were a pastor, I'd preach Christ Crucified for sinners (like me) and exhort people to enter into His rest by faith in His finished work.
What gets under my skin:
A church that allows a "pastor" to "lead" based on style over substance. Maybe its Godly, maybe it's not, just keep it cool and relevant to the post modern crowd.
A church that allows a "pastor" to teach based on emotional whims rather than the solid Word of God. Someone who over-emphasizes doing what you feel rather than walking in obedience to God no matter what you're feeling.
A church that allows a "pastor" to lead based on popularity and adherence to his own ideas of image, style, and what's "cool."
A church that allows a "pastor" to demoralize and stifle followers who have different ideas and just aren't cool in society's eyes--doesn't matter if they have a Godly heart.
A church that allows a "pastor" to be more concerned about graphic design than the hearts of people who just don't care about being hip and cool but they care about Jesus.
A church that allows a "pastor" to lead when he obviously has no leadership skills whatsoever. Someone who aimlessly jumps from one thing to the next based on whatever he's feeling and what he thinks will suit him, not on what's best for those who are trying to follow his lead.
That's what gets under my skin...
Anonymous - Hope that's not your church...sounds like dysfunctional leadership on several levels. - Mark
